about us

Dr Briar Warin

Consultant Psychiatrist, FRANZCP

Briar is a medical doctor specialising in mental health (a psychiatrist) for adults aged 18-65. She grew up on the North Shore and attended medical school at the University of Otago. She worked in Rotorua for a number of years before returning home to Auckland to complete her training.

Briar is particularly interested in helping people who have experienced trauma, as well as a range of mood and anxiety issues.

In addition to standard adult psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment, Briar is also qualified to provide EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy. She has completed advanced training in this area.

She is currently working one day a week at In Mind, and the rest of the week in public in the perinatal mental health team at Waitemata.

When not at work, Briar enjoys spending time with her dog (featured left!) who might be able to help her in clinic one day if his young border collie energy settles...

Initial Assessments

This is a comprehensive in-person assessment, usually taking 90 minutes.

You may be sent questionnaires to fill in prior to your appointment.

At the appointment, we will discuss your current difficulties, as well as explore your medical history and background. We will work together to make sense of your issues and create a treatment plan.

A letter will also be sent to your GP.

Follow-Up

These are arranged to review your progress and optimise your treatment.

Medications can be adjusted as needed.

Appointments are usually 30 minutes, though can be longer if preferred.

These appointments can be in person or online via telehealth.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR is an evidence-based psychological therapy. It works for people who have experienced trauma, and increasingly for other issues e.g. depression and anxiety.

A therapy hour comprises 50 minutes face to face time, and 10 minutes for preparation/clinical notes.

More information is available here: https://www.emdr.org.nz/what-is-emdr
